I just don't understand what the big deal is with this "content management" stuff.
Why should I have my Web site made using NEATO? What's the difference between how Web sites used to be made and Web sites made with NEATO? ...and will it cost more using NEATO?
First, keep in mind that you typically get what you pay for. ...and NEATO comes in three different versions to meet your needs and budget.
If you're not entirely certain what "content management" means, and how it will greatly benefit you - then let's start with me asking you a few questions.
Have you ever had a Web site created before?
Yes.
Have you ever had to make a simple edit such as changing a few words and/or adding a new image to a certain page?
Yes.
Have you had to wait for the designer to schedule you into his/her queue? Even though it was a simple edit - it wasn't done as quickly as you would have preferred or expected?
Oh yea. Once I had to change just a single word on my site, but the designer said there were four people ahead of me in the queue and that one of those projects was a "rush" project. So I had to wait in line which was understandable but frustrating since it was such a simple edit to make.
What if you could do it yourself?
But I'm not a programmer. I don't know anything about this HTML stuff.
You don't have to.
That's the beauty of NEATO. You can do nearly everything on your own without having any programming knowledge! It's all done through a browser, whether you're on a Mac or PC. Firefox, Internet Explorer, Safari, Opera... nearly all browsers support NEATO.
Are you saying I can make text edits to my site, from any computer I happen to be at?
Yes.
Are you saying I can add new images to my site, and I don't have to know how to program with this HTML stuff?
Yes, NEATO is very easy to use. Lots of big friendly buttons.
So why does it cost more than "traditional" Web sites?
You are certainly welcome to have your site designed with another firm or agency if paying less money is your primary concern. Again, remember that you typically get what you pay for.
...and if you can find a "dirt cheap" price on a Web site design, it's probably going to be a "static" Web site. Therefore if you want to make edits on your own you will have to have an HTML editor and be somewhat familiar with the HTML language to do any edits yourself.
As for adding new pages, unless you're very skilled with editing HTML on your own - you'll more than likely have to go back to your designer.
Wait, are you saying I can add new pages to my Web site with NEATO? ...all on my own?
Yes. You can add new pages, add entirely new sections to your site with NEATO. You can modify, add to, or remove buttons from the main navigation. NEATO is extremely scalable, and can accomodate both small and large Web sites.
Another thing to keep in mind is that with NEATO, your content is stored in a database.
What does that mean?
The content of every page will be stored in a database, separately from the actual design of the site.
By contrast, you can think of a "static" Web site as a magazine. Each page is designed individually, one by one by one. Let's say you have a Web site that is 500 pages. A "static" Web site designer will have to lay out each of those 500 pages individually. Now let's say five or six years down the line you want to give your site a new look and feel.
That designer will have to re-lay out all 500 pages. One by one by one.
With NEATO, your content is stored separately from the design. ...the look and feel of your site is controlled with just a few files. This means that five or six years down the line if you want to give your site a new look and feel, we just change a few files and instantly - all 500 pages of content are updated.
So in the long term, you will end up spending far less on design time because it will take us just a few short days to update your entire site.
So with NEATO, it might be a bit more expensive up front. But I'll have control over my own content, and down the road I'll spend a lot less when I want to update the design.
Oh my goodness, I see why this "content management" stuff is so awesome!
It's amazing!
It's NEATO.
